Jerash is famous for its colonnaded streets, theaters, temples, and the magnificent Hadrian’s Arch. Explore the ancient city, including the Temple of Artemis, the Oval Plaza, the North Theater, and the Nymphaeum. Midday: • Ajloun (40 km from Jerash, approximately 1 hour): Proceed to Ajloun, where you’ll visit the Ajloun Castle (Qal'at Ar-Rabad), built in the 12th century. The castle offers spectacular views of the Jordan Valley, and you can learn about its historical significance during the Crusader era. Afternoon: • Umm Qais (55 km from Ajloun, approximately 1 hour): Continue your journey to the ancient Greco-Roman city of Umm Qais, known for its stunning views of the Sea of Galilee, Golan Heights, and the Yarmouk River. Explore the Roman theater, colonnaded streets, and the ruins of the ancient city. The site also features Ottoman-era buildings. • Back to Amman overnight.Â
Madaba – Mount Nebo – Dana View – Shobak Castle Morning: • Start your journey with a pick-up from your hotel in Amman. • Madaba (45 km from Umm Qais, approximately 1 hour): Head to Madaba, famous for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. The St. George’s Church houses the famous 6th-century Mosaic Map of the Holy Land. You can also visit the Madaba Archaeological Park to see more ancient mosaics. • Mount Nebo (10 km from Madaba, approximately 20 minutes): Start the day by visiting Mount Nebo, where it is believed that Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. The Moses Memorial Church on the mountain offers panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Jerusalem. There are also ancient mosaics here. Midday: • Dana View (60 km from Mount Nebo, approximately 1.5 hours): Head south towards Dana Biosphere Reserve, a beautiful nature reserve with breathtaking views of the Jordanian wilderness. The reserve is known for its diverse wildlife and dramatic landscapes, perfect for hiking and enjoying nature. Afternoon: • Shobak Castle (80 km from Dana View, approximately 1.5 hours): Visit Shobak Castle, a Crusader-era fortress built in the early 12th century. It is smaller but no less impressive than other castles in Jordan. The castle offers stunning views of the surrounding desert and mountains. • Little Petra enjoys the rest of your day. • Overnight on Petra.Â
Day 3: Petra Morning: • Exploring Petra: Visit The Street of Facades, the Roman Theater, Royal Tombs, The Monastery (Ad-Deir), and the Great Temple. Petra is vast, so consider a guided tour to make the most of your time. • Architecture: The city's most famous structures are carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliffs, giving Petra its iconic look. These include tombs, temples, and houses. The most famous building is Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), which has been featured in films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. • Water System: The Nabataeans were masters of water management, creating complex systems of dams, tunnels, and cisterns to collect and store water, allowing Petra to thrive in the harsh desert environment. • Decline: Petra began to decline after the Roman Empire annexed the Nabataean Kingdom in 106 CE, and it eventually faded into obscurity after a series of earthquakes in the 4th and 6th centuries CE. • Rediscovery: Petra remained largely forgotten by the Western world until 1812, when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it. Since then, it has been a popular archaeological and tourist destination. • UNESCO world heritage site: Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 due to its cultural significance and historical importance. • Modern-Day Petra: Today, Petra is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
Wadi Rum – Dead Sea Morning: • Wadi Rum (110 km from Petra, approximately 2 hours): Depart early for Wadi Rum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful desert landscapes in the world. Take a 4x4 jeep tour through the desert, exploring the dramatic sandstone mountains, narrow canyons, and ancient petroglyphs. The famous Lawrence of Arabia sites are also located here. Afternoon: • Dead Sea (330 km from Wadi Rum, approximately 4 hours): After your adventure in Wadi Rum, head towards the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth. Spend the afternoon relaxing and floating in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, renowned for its therapeutic properties. You can also enjoy a mud bath for a unique spa experience. • Overnight at the Dead Sea or return to Amman, depending on your schedule.
